Your September “back-to” checklist
Start preparing now for the back-to-school and back-to-work rush, and you’ll
sail into September without losing that relaxed summer feeling.
Adapt this checklist, and chip away at your “back-to” chores before
the rush begins. By being organized, you’ll be able to take a positive
approach to back-to-school — and that’s an important lesson for
kids of all ages.
- Pick up stationery items. Notebooks, pens, binders…
these are the hallmarks that fall’s approaching. Don’t forget
a planner for everyone — plus one for the home message centre.
- Dress for success. Whether it’s T-shirts and jeans,
dress code classics or a new suit for Mom, a new fall outfit is on everyone’s
list. Plan a couple of weekend mornings in the shops while the crowds are
sparse and you’ll be ahead of the game. Allow time to find a well-fitted
backpack.
- Buy new sneakers for the entire family. Make sure everyone’s
decked out with new running shoes and sports equipment for a healthy, active
fall.
- Visit the tech stores. If a cell phone or computer is on
anyone’s shopping list, start looking early so you can comparison shop
for savings.
- Prepare the home front. Getting organized at home —
especially the kids’ rooms, study areas, kitchen and entrance —
can help smooth the transition to the activity-packed days of September.
- Sign up for classes. Many continuing education, municipal
or regional exercise classes, sports leagues and other extra-curricular activities
fill up early. Start investigating now to avoid disappointment for you or
your kids. Set aside a day to register in person if necessary.
- Stock up on lunch gear. Get everyone in the family a new
lunch bag — and make sure each is distinctive, to avoid morning mix-ups.
Stock cupboards with re-sealable and thermal containers for portable lunches
and drinks.
- Pick up a new heart healthy cookbook. Once September hits,
mealtimes take on a whole new sense of urgency. Don’t let your good
summer eating habits go out the window. Buy a new heart healthy cookbook to
inspire yourself with fresh breakfast, lunch and dinner ideas, or borrow one
from the library.
- Ease into a routine. Practice makes perfect. Creating more
structured days before school starts up will help make the transition a little
easier.
