Why volunteerism is good
for everyone
Whether it's sorting food at a food bank, coaching a sports team, lending a hand in a hospital, working to protect wildlife, the 46% of Canadians who volunteer contribute immeasurably to our society. They also gain something valuable in the process.
Help your health
Experts believe that doing good things to help others elicits a physical response similar to practicing yoga. The heart rate slows and blood pressure is decreased. They call this sense of calm, "helper's high." Many older volunteers have reported a reduction of anxiety and depression and an increase in life satisfaction.
Whatever your age, volunteerism can help you to:
- Have a positive impact on your community
- Deepen your connection to other people and your community
- Learn a new skill
- Build your resumé and expand your career options
- Participate in an activity or industry that interests you
- Enjoy new experiences and meet new people
- Set a positive example for your kids or grandkids.
How you can get involved
It's easy to start volunteering, whether you want to dedicate a little time or a lot, as a steady commitment or on an occasional basis.
- Find a cause that's important to you. Your time is a valuable resource, so you will want to know you're devoting it to something that's meaningful to you.
- Consider what you want to get out of the experience, and the type of work you'd like to do. For example, would you like to gain experience that will help your career? Or do you want to do something completely different for a change of pace?
- Be realistic about how much time you can donate. How many hours a week can you dedicate and for how many months would you like to pursue a position? Many agencies will need to know this before they can assign an appropriate role.
- Volunteer Canada suggests that you start by finding a Volunteer Centre near you. These are organizations that help to develop volunteerism within their community. You can also try your local newspaper listings or website.
Once you start your new endeavour as a volunteer, remember to enjoy the experience, knowing that you are making an important contribution.
